Video games are now a legitimate high school sport

Atlanta (CNN Business)Competitive video game playing, also known as esports, is now a high school varsity sport in eight states. Two teams of students with six players each faced off in a video game game called “Smite,” one of the three high-school-sanctioned esport games, in which they battle each other as gods and other mythological characters. According to Brian Prokes, the center’s executive director, the facility’s goal is to level the playing field and give anybody an opportunity to compete. “If there are two schools that don’t have the facilities to host a five-on-five tournament, we are here for them,” he said. The regular esports season runs through the end of April, with playoffs and finals starting in May. A …

How did this scheme work? It was all orchestrated by William Rick Singer, CEO of a college admissions prep company called The Key. Singer pleaded guilty to four charges Tuesday and admitted that everything a prosecutor accused him …

Joe Biden readies major endorsements and message of strength ahead of likely 2020 run

(CNN)Joe Biden didn’t clear the field, so he’s poised to join it. His verbal slip — intentional or not — drew laughter in the room and considerable attention outside, but it was the words “new left” that may have offered the best clue about how he plans to run a third bid for the White House. He plans to emphasize the record of the Obama administration over his own long record from the Senate and intends to push back on any notion he’s not progressive enough for today’s Democratic Party. As he prepares for a possible run, Biden has hunkered down for strategy sessions with a tight knit group of advisers and held meetings with top Democrats and elected officials. …

The story behind the Sala transfer flights

From the beginning of December through to a few days before the fatal crash, a succession of journeys were made between the UK and France by the various parties involved in the transfer deal. Football agent Willie McKay, who brokered the deal, has said he and his family arranged and paid for these flights. What do we know about these flights? A BBC Wales investigation has found the flights were conducted by three different companies or individuals. We understand that all were filed on flight plans as “general aviation” – therefore private, rather than commercial flights – and that none flew under an Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) An AOC is a licence which charter companies obtain from the CAA – …

Liverpool sees off Bayern Munich as Messi inspires Barcelona

(CNN)As the political uncertainty surrounding the UK’s future relationship with Europe shows no sign of reaching a resolution, Liverpool, like all three of its Premier League rivals, just can’t get enough of the continent’s most prestigious tournament. Liverpool, along with Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City, will all compete in the last eight of the competition — coincidentally four teams whose cities all voted to remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Blind runner, guide dog trio makes history in NYC Half Marathon

(CNN)Thomas Panek and his running guide dogs Westley, Waffle and Gus made history on Sunday in the 2019 New York City Half Marathon. According to the race website, Panek’s team finished the race in just shy of two hours and 21 minutes. An avid runner, Panek had no intention to give up the sport, even after losing his eyesight in his early 20s. Thanks to volunteer human guides, he has since completed 20 marathons. Still, Panek missed the feeling of independence, which ultimately inspired him to start a formal training program for running guide dogs. “It never made sense to me to walk out the door and leave my guide dog behind when I love to run and they love …

Prisoners in England to be taught code

The hope is that the trials will eventually lead to a network of coding workshops in UK prisons. The programme is modelled on the Last Mile project in the San Quentin prison, in California, which has helped almost 500 offenders find jobs after release, with none of those taking part reoffending. That compares with a national reoffending rate in the US of 55%. Reoffending in the UK is estimated to cost around £15bn, according to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Minster for Digital Margot James said: “The government is committed to stopping the cycle of reoffending and a valuable asset to prevent recidivism is employment. “Equipping offenders with coding skills will help them into life-changing work and …

To help it do things that it had never done before. This result is a great push for the future, we’re strong and we showed it.” Atletico must be sick of the sight of Ronaldo pushing for the future — he’s now scored a remarkable 25 goals in 33 games against the Spanish side.
